Strengthened EU regulations: Frøslev ready with fire-tested solid wood cladding for the European market
Frøslev has a continued focus on documenting the fire performance of its products. Therefore, we offer a wide range of products for the European market that meet the new, strengthened EU regulations.
In May this year, the European Commission issued a delegated regulation on the conditions for classification, without testing, of solid wood panelling and cladding, which came into force on 20 August.
The new regulation requires wood to be tested in order to document that it meets the D-s2,d0 classification for fire safety.
- Until now, EU legislation in this area has been less strict. With the introduction of the new requirements, products that were previously largely marketed without fire performance testing must now be tested. More specifically, this means that the burning behaviour of treatments such as heat treatment, surface treatment, pressure impregnation and the like must be technically documented and approved in order for us to legally market the products, explains Thomas Lindner Nielsen, Product Specialist at Frøslev Træ.
Avoid long lead times
The new legal requirements may, for a period of time, create a sort of vacuum for timber yards, wholesalers, department stores and the like in the EU looking to buy tested, documented goods. Among other things, this may entail long lead times, because a large number of manufacturers have to put the sale of selected products on hold while the products’ fire performance is being tested.
- At Frøslev, we prioritise fire safety and fire testing of products. We test our products continuously and participate in research-based reaction-to-fire testing of outdoor cladding, meaning that we can offer a wide range of cladding and panelling that already meets the strengthened requirements.
In the future, documentation of fire performance must be included in the product's declaration of performance, referring to the fire classification report from an accredited fire laboratory. Referring to a table in a harmonised standard or a Commission decision is no longer sufficient for treated wood.
